Flushable cloth diaper liners are one way to make cloth diapering easy. These biodegradable diaper liners simply flush away messes, without any fuss or muss. They are ultra-simple to use, simply place the liner into the diaper and put the diaper on your baby. Then, when the liner is wet, just toss it in the trash. If it is messy, just let it slide into the toilet. Wait a moment for the liner to absorb water, then flush it away. It will break down in the sewer or septic system.

If you have difficult plumbing, flushable diaper liners may not be the best option. However, for most modern plumbing, the liners are no problem at all. They are just like flushing thick toilet paper.

A cloth diaper sprayer can make cleaning cloth diapers incredibly easy. You won’t have to worry about dunking or rinsing, just spray the diapers clean and toss them in the diaper pail. A diaper sprayer can also be used for rinsing out potties, rinsing buckets, washing out the diaper pail, rinsing muddy shoes, and dozens of other uses long after your baby is done with diapers.

Be sure to get a good quality cloth diaper sprayer. A cheaper sprayer may save a few bucks up front, but they don’t last. Worse, they may leak and cause major repairs – costing far more than the little you saved.

A good diaper sprayer will have a shut off valve and pressure regulator. This means you can shut off the water to keep curious toddlers from flooding the bathroom. The shut off will also come in handy if a leak starts or if, as happened to one mom I know, your kid takes a pair of scissors to the hose to see what is inside. The pressure regulator is important so you don’t have spray so strong you get an impromptu shower or have spray that is so soft it does no good.

A cloth diaper sprayer is not a necessity, but it sure makes cloth diapering easier. If you don’t want to get a sprayer, you can use flushable cloth diaper liners to make cleaning messes easier. Washable diaper liners are also a simple way to remove messes and are easier to rinse out than a whole diaper. Fleece liners are particularly simple to clean and often messes shake right off.

Cloth diaper wipes will also save you a lot of money. The average family spends $400 on wipes for just one baby in two years. Cloth diaper wipes, even really nice ones, will cost you anywhere from $20-80 for all the wipes you’ll need. When your baby potty trains, you can either pass them along to someone else who needs them or use them as cleaning rags.

Cloth diaper wipes can also help prevent and treat diaper rash. The best cure for diaper rash, according to the Mayo clinic, is to keep the baby’s bottom clean and dry. They say that disposable diapers and wipes can contribute to rashes, as can some additives used to wash cloth diapers (avoid bleach and fabric softener on diapers!).

Cloth wipes come in many different styles and fabrics, but they are basically all squares or rectangles of fabric. Cloth wipes may be single or double-layered. Thirsties wipes, for instance, are made from microfleece and cotton velour. Hemp cloth wipes are usually a single layer, as hemp fleece is fairly thick on its own. Flannel wipes can be single sided, or paired with another layer of flannel, bamboo velour, cotton sherpa or other materials.

You can use cloth wipes with just plain warm water (some people keep a pump thermos full of warm water near the changing table). I usually wet a few wipes at the sink before changing my baby. You can also use a spray bottle of wipes solution. Another option is to keep wipes wet and ready to use in a recycled wipes container or wipes warmer. If you choose this option, be sure to use distilled water or boil the water first so your wipes won’t grow nasty things.

You can use tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract in the water to help keep anything yucky from growing, but you will need to change the wipes and solution regularly as neither of these things is truly a preservative. Yes, I know there are all kinds of rumors about what tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract can do, but there is very little real evidence and I much prefer to be safe than sorry when it comes to a baby’s health.
